Morrissey to hit Middle East
by: Newsdesk

Singer Morrissey is set to perform in Iran alongside a slew of local artists - and will be one of the first Western acts to appear in the country if negotiations are successful.

The former Smiths frontman hopes to appear onstage with acclaimed Arabian pop singer Kazem Al Sahir, one of the star’s professed heroes, and is currently in talks with the Iranian government to play a gig there later this year.

But the 48-year-old remains adamant he will play a series of concerts in the Middle East even if the performance with al-Sahir does not go ahead.

Merck Mercuriadis, Morrissey’s manager, says, “One way or another we will tour the Middle East - in terms of places like Jerusalem and Beirut. And we hope to play Iran.”

Morrissey’s management is awaiting a formal response from Iran’s Ministry Of Culture and Islamic Guidance on the matter.

Jack White working on three albums

Jack White has revealed he he is working on three albums.

The White Stripes/Raconteurs man explained his current projects while discussing the fallout caused by his first band scrapping their the rest of their 2007 tour dates because drummer Meg White was suffering from acute anxiety.

“Half of me was glad because I have three other records I’m working on, and I didn’t have any time to work on them,” he told the Seattle Times. “I was really getting worried that I might have to not do these things I wanted to do because of the touring.”

White would not name what the other projects he was working on, but denied it was the Raconteurs’ new album or a long-rumored solo album.

White added that the cancelled dates did not mark the end of the White Stripes, though, declaring: “If it came to a point where Meg said, ‘I don’t want to be in this band anymore, it doesn’t fulfil me in any way,’ then it would be a different story. But she’s not saying that.”

White speculated on how long the band’s live break was going to be.

“I guess it’s up to her…she seems to be lively,” he said. “She was really invigorating working together on this ‘Conquest’ record [new single]. I was wondering if she was interested and she was completely–very, very involved.”

White also spoke about the band’s collaboration with Beck.

“We had some songs that were kind of lingering around,” he explained. “Meg and I had never really played them, we just kind of learned them in Beck’s living room. His studio wasn’t ready to go, so he just set it up in his living room. He’s inspiring to us because of the way he looks at folk music. It’s different from the way we look at folk music.”

Smashing Pumpkins Issue New EP Today

Just in case you were trying to come up with a good excuse to buy another copy of the Smashing Pumpkins’ Zeitgeist, well, how’s about some more bonus material? Today, January 2, Billy the kid and his ragtag crew released American Gothic, a four-song EP, which is available in the U.S. exclusively through iTunes. You can purchase the EP all by its lonesome or as a bribebonus for picking up a copy of Zeitgeist for your iThing. Outside the U.S., the disc will emerge in physical form sometime later this month.

The tunes were mostly penned during the band’s summer residencies in Asheville, North Carolina and San Francisco, and laid to tape at L.A.’s Pass Studio while the band rested up between tours late last year. One notable exception is “The Rose March”, which will be familiar to some who caught Billy solo after the release of his 2005 solo LP The Future Embrace. Pete Townsend is apparently a fan of the track, and balked when young Corgan told him the tune wouldn’t be appearing on Zeitgeist. Maybe if he’d bought the right version! Oh, right, here we are.

That respite between tours is coming to a close later this month when the band hits the European circuit. They’ll follow that with four stops on the previously reported V Festival down there in Australia.

Bentley To Appear On Conan, Prepping New Single

Bentley To Appear On Conan, Prepping New Single
By Tai Saint Louis

Fonzworth Bentley will make an appearance on NBC’s Late Night With Conan O’Brien tomorrow night (Jan 3) on the show’s second live broadcast of the new year, to promote his etiquette book Advance Your Swagger: How to Use Manners, Confidence, and Style to Get Ahead.

Like many live programs, Late Night started airing immediate reruns when the Writer’s Guild of America went on strike on November 5.

O’Brien’s show, along with The Tonight Show With Jay Leno announced in December that they would return with live programming on January 2, albeit without a writing staff, after a breakdown in negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producer’s.

“We haven’t really talked about how the writer’s strike really affected our Hip-Hop community,” said Bentley speaking exclusively to AllHipHop.com. “I remember, I sent the book to everybody. Conan O’Brien was the first person that called and the week I was supposed to go on his show, the strike happened. I’ve been in limbo like everybody else. So I feel very fortunate that January 2nd will be their first day back, and I’ll be on the show Jan 3rd.”

According to Bentley, Advance Your Swagger, which was released on September 25, came about as part of an effort by publishing giant Random House to release more urban books.

“They wanted me to do a book about taking yourself to the next level,” explained Bentley, who records for Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label. “I didn’t really wanna do a book about myself. What I said was needed was a book on etiquette. One of the things that I’ve noticed is that we’re really living in the golden age of disrespect. When I look at etiquette books, they don’t really speak to [that] audience per say.”

The book covers a variety of topics from the magic of the words “please” and “thank you,” to the art of eating well, to cell phone and email etiquette, interviewing tips and “music industry etiquette.”

“People just don’t know, they just run up to whoever they see, whatever star – Russell Simmons or Jay, or whomever,” says Bentley. “A lot of time they just shove a CD; there’s no cover, there’s no artwork. You spend time writing your lyrics and going over them, and performing to your best ability, and this is your heart and soul in this? And after doing all that, you won’t even put a nice cover on it, you just walk around with a CD and a magic marker? You can’t just be walking around like that. Because for a Lyor Cohen or a LA Reid, that says to them, the way your music looks, that says to them what you think about your art.”

Fonzworth Bentley is also gearing up for the 2008 release of his debut album Cool Outrageous Lovers Of Uniquely Raw Style. (C.O.L.O.U.R.S.)

While he had planned to release the title track “C.O.L.O.U.R.S.” as his first single, plans to shoot a video for the song featuring Lil’ Wayne and Faith Evans, were interrupted by the untimely death of Pimp C, who is also featured on the song.

Bentley has shot a video for his first single, due out this month, but will not release the name of the single for fear that the release will be preempted by internet file sharing.
